Studying at a university with significant Indian student population offers practical advantages especially for first time international students. Established Indian communities mean easier cultural adjustment, availability of Indian food, shared study resources and guidance from senior students.
Russia leads globally with 12,000-15,000 Indian MBBS students across 45+ universities. Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) hosts the largest single concentration with 500-700 Indian students, while Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University enrolls 400-500 Indian students. These universities have decades of experience supporting Indian students with dedicated Indian coordinators, special kitchen facilities and community events.
Georgia has become a preferred destination hosting 4,000-5,000 Indian medical students total. Tbilisi State Medical University enrolls 300-400 Indian students while David Tvildiani Medical University has a similar population of 300-400 students. The smaller overall student population means Indians form a larger percentage creating tight knit communities with strong peer networks.
Philippines hosts 6,000-8,000 Indian MBBS students with UV Gullas College of Medicine and Davao Medical School each enrolling 200-300 Indian students. Kazakhstan attracts 3,000-4,000 Indian students to institutions like Al Farabi Kazakh National University and Semey Medical University.
Large Indian communities provide cultural familiarity reducing homesickness, peer support for academic challenges, shared FMGE preparation resources and coaching, and senior-junior mentorship systems. Indian Student Associations at these universities organize cultural events celebrating Diwali and Holi, arrange Indian food provisions, coordinate FMGE study groups, provide newcomer orientation, and maintain WhatsApp groups for updates and guidance.
Having Indian seniors at a university provides invaluable guidance for FMGE preparation, clinical rotations and navigating administrative processes. They share notes, recommend resources and help juniors avoid common mistakes. This peer network is difficult to replicate at universities with few Indian students.
